I was selected to create a translucent art piece to wrap around the new bus shelter installed on N. 14th Street in St. Louis to serve the residents of the nearby newly constructed affordable and market rate housing units.
Inspired by the 1968 rent strike at Carr Square Village, I created this public art piece to highlight the resilience of historic community leaders like Loretta Hall and Mrs. Thelma Green, weaving together stories of balanced resilience and triumph in the fight for affordable housing. Through vivid colors through storytelling, I used my mix-media work to connect archival images of Carr School and key moments from the past to today’s ongoing efforts through this project to rebuild our city. My artwork ensures that “Hope Endures” by reminding this community of its rich history of activism and progressive change.
The Near North Side neighborhood of Carr Square is transforming into hubs of creativity and connection through a vibrant public art initiative that showcases how art and infrastructure can work hand-in-hand to uplift communities.
Guided by the Near North Side Choice Public Art Advisory Group, composed of representatives from five neighborhoods, this project features a diverse collection of works selected through a competitive process. I created one of two bus shelters wrapped in translucent public art. These installations reflect the creativity of the artists and the spirit of the community they serve.
